Thirteen was lucky for the Black Bears on Friday night, as they defeated the Bend Elks,6-5, in thirteen innings.
Bend put the first run on the board in the top of the second from a putout by Nick Osuna to drive in Billy King to lead the bears 1-0 heading into bottom of the second.
With Trevor Lane on third thanks to a single by Nick Funyak, Kyle Hunt’s sacrifice fly drove in Lane to tie the Elks 1-1 at the end of the second. The Bears took the lead in the bottom of the third off of a Joey Greco double to drive home Corey VanDomelen for 2-1 lead.
The Elks tied the game, once again, in the top of the fourth off of a double for the 2-2 score at the end of the fourth. The score remained tied until the top of the sixth, with the Elks scoring two extra runs on starting pitcher Shane Bieber to lead the bears 4-2 at the end of the sixth. Another Elks run in the top of the seventh gave the Elks the 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Bears' offense came alive in the bottom of the seventh, starting with a Joey Greco single to right field with the bases loaded to drive home VanDomelen for the 5-3 score. A two run single by Trevor Lane brought home Austin Baker and Derrick Rustich to once again tie the game 5-5 at the end of the eighth.
The game went into extra innings and with bases loaded at the bottom of the thirteenth, VanDomelen took a walk and brought home Taylor Bryant for the 6-5 victory over the Elks.
Shane Bieber pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, while striking out five. Relief pitcher Henry Omana pitched two and one-thirds innings allowing one hit and one run. Closing pitcher Joe Reta pitched four and two-thirds innings allowing only one hit while striking four.
Multiple players had an extraordinary night, including Corey VanDomelen who went two for five while touching home twice and Joey Greco, who also went two for five and contributed two RBIs. Trevor Lane was exceptional, going two for five, with two RBIs and two runs.
The Bears face the Elks for the second of this three game series at Story Field Friday night, where Elks pitcher ZacK Carter (2-0, 2.36 ERA) will face Zebastian Valenzuela (2-0, 2.45 ERA) at 6:35. Friday is Heritage Bank Night where there will be prizes galore and giveaway items from Heritage Bank.
