Comeback kids

Yakima, Wash.- It hasn't been easy away from David Story Field this season for Cowlitz (10-14, 22-29) but Wednesday night the Black Bears ended their road schedule in grand fashion coming back from a 3-0 deficit to win 6-3 over Yakima Valley (16-8, 31-20).

The Black Bears got into the game in the sixth. Weston Hatten (JR, Nevada) hit an RBI single to score Toby Johnson (JR, Arkansas State) which narrowed the gap to 3-1.

Cowlitz got one more in the seventh. Michael Forgione (JR, University of Portland) drilled a pitch off the left field wall which brought home Colin Winn (JR, Chico State) on a triple to make it 3-2.

The Black Bears then exploded for four runs in the eighth to take the lead. With runners at second and third Ryan Garcia threw a wild pitch to score Kenyon Yovan (IN-FR, Oregon) from third to tie the ballgame. Justin Wakem (SO, Western Oregon) hit an RBI single to give the Black Bears the lead 4-3. Jace McKinney (SO, Mt. Hood CC) drove home an insurance run with a grounder to third and reached on an error to score Wakem to make it 5-3.  Finally Winn scored from third on a passed ball from Ryan McCarty to cap off the big inning.

Nico Tellache (IN-FR, Oregon) and closer Austin Dick (JR, Nevada) locked down the Pippins the rest of the way to earn the victory. Tellache picked up the win pitching 3.2 innings improving his record to 2-2. Tellache did not give up a run on just two hits and struck out two Pippins. Dick earned another four out save not allowing a hit while striking out two batters. It was Dick's ninth save of the season whch ties him for third place in the West Coast League. Garcia took the loss dropping his record to 4-4. Garcia lasted 1.1 innings giving up four runs, all earned, on four hits while striking out two.

Yakima Valley opened the scoring in the first. Jay Schuyler hit a two-run single to put the Pippins up 2-0. Kyle Stahl hit an RBI single in the fourth to make it 3-0.

The win was the first ever against the Pippins in nine tries.
