Red hot Knights

Longview, Wash.- Cowlitz (10-15, 22-30) ran into a red hot Corvallis Knights (15-10, 33-19) team Friday night and dropped game one 9-2.

Corvallis has now won nine game in a row.

The Knights struck early as they scored three runs in the first. Roman Garcia hit a grounder to first base and Lorin Archibald (JR, Oklahoma) tried to throw out Kyle Nobach coming home from third base but Nobach slid in before Jack Reisinger (SO, Seeattle University) could apply the tag. With the bases loaded starter Chandler Greenfield (SO, Washington State) walked Andrew Reichenbach to make it 2-0. The next batter Matt Kelly hit an RBI groundout to score Zak Taylor which made it 3-0.

The Black Bears countered in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded and no one out Kenyon Yovan (IN-FR, Oregon) hit a grounder in the hole left side to score Toby Johnson (JR, Arkansas State). The Knights left fielder Kelly let the ball get by him which allowed Weston Hatten (JR, Nevada) to score as well on the error. Yovan got credit for one RBI on the play to narrow the gap to 3-2.

But back struck Corvallis in the third to put the game away. Greg Saenz started things off with an RBI fielder's choice. The next batter Taylor Travess did the same scoring two making it 6-2. Travess only got credit for one RBI as the second run scored was unearned. Travess then scored on a wild pitch from third to make it a five run lead.

Corvallis got two more in the fourth. Both Taylor and Michael Farris stole home to put the Knights up 9-2.

The first reliever for the Knights Chris Burkholder earned the win pitching six innings of three hit shutout baseball while also striking out seven Black Bear batters. Burkholder is now 2-2 on the season. Greenfield took the loss ending the season 0-4. Greenfield pitched 3.1 innings giving up all nine runs, six earned, on six hits with four strikeouts. Hazahel Quijada started the game for the Knights and left with the lead intact but didn't qualify for the win only pitching the first two innings giving up both Cowlitz runs on three hits and struck out two batters.
