Going out in style

Longview, Wash.- Kevin Baker (JR, University of Portland) saved his best start for last as he struck out 11 batters en route to a 3-1 win over Corvallis (16-11, 34-20) to end the season on a high note.

Baker's 11 K's were the most one pitcher had in a single game this season. Baker had multiple strikeouts in each of his five innings of work including striking out the side in the second.

Jordan Jones (IN-FR, Washington) pitched a perfect sixth inning, Nico Tellache (IN-FR, Oregon) pitched the seventh allowing just one walk and Kenyon Yovan (IN-FR, Oregon) handled the eighth allowing just one hit. Closer Austin Dick (JR, Nevada) earned his tenth save of the season getting help from the defense with a 5-4-3 double play. Dick finished third in the West Coast League in saves.

Offensively Cowlitz (11-16, 23-31) evened the game at one in the bottom of the fourth. Yovan hit an RBI groundout to bring home Toby Johnson (JR, Arkansas State). The Black Bears took the lead in the fifth. Weston Hatten (JR, Nevada) hit an RBI single and Trey Yukumoto (SO, Hawaii Pacific) came home. They then got a little insurance in the seventh. Hatten drove in his second RBI of the game with a double. Johnson once again scored on the play.

Hatten ended the season as the Black Bears batting champion and RBI leader with a .296 average and 27 runs batted in. Hatten also finished fifth in the WCL in RBI's.

Michael Forgione (JR, University of Portland) stole two more bases in the finale, both in the first. Forgione finished tied for first in stolen bases in the league.

The only run Corvallis got was in the first when Roman Garcia hit a solo home run that was just fair down the left field line.

The Black Bears 23 wins was the fourth most in the seven year history of the franchise.
