Great first impression

Longview, Wash.- The Cowlitz Black Bears opened up their eighth season with an emphatic victory over non-West Coast League opponent Thurston County 15-3.

   The Senators opened the scoring in the first when a runner at third scored on a passed ball but it was all Cowlitz after that. Kona Quiggle (SO, Grand Canyon) drove in Jace McKinney (JR, Mt Hood College) with an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning.

   The Black Bears exploded with seven runs in the second on eight hits to take an 8-1 lead. Cowlitz sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.

   Thurston County hit a lead-off home run in the fourth but the Black Bears answered with four more runs in the fifth to make it 12-2.

   Josh Palmquist (JR, Pierce College) hit an RBI triple in the sixth to increase the lead to 13-2. The next batter Nate Affonso (SO, Clark College) drove in Palmquist with an RBI single.

   The Senators got their final run in the seventh with an RBI ground out. Cowlitz answered right away in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Kim (SO, University of Portland) got an RBI ground out of his own which brought home McKinney.

   Evan Williams (IN-FR, Oregon) had a team high 4-for-5 night with 3 RBI and a run scored. One of Williams' hits was a triple.

   Yancy Bird (SO, Lower Columbia College) got the start on the mound and earned the win pitching five innings giving up just two runs on four hits while striking out seven batters. Two more LCC hurlers followed and each lasted two innings. Thomas Gomez (SO, Lower Columbia College) allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout. Zac Horne (SO, Lower Columbia College) didn't allow a hit and struck out four of the seven batters he saw.

   The Black Bears had six extra base hits on the night with four doubles and two triples. Every member of the starting lineup had a hit and eight of the nine had an RBI.

   Cowlitz gets WCL league play underway tomorrow night when defending champion Corvallis comes to town. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
