Missed opportunities

Longview, Wash.- Corvallis (2-0) scored three runs in the first inning and held on the rest of the way to take the opening series over Cowlitz (0-2) 4-3.

   The Black Bears had their chances to tie the game putting runners in scoring position in the fifth and eighth but each time the Corvallis defense got out of the jam. The Knights turned three 6-3 double plays as well to keep the lead intact.

   Jordan Qsar opened the scoring with an RBI single. Three batters later Andrew Barrera hit two-run double to put the Knights up by three.

   The Black Bears answered with their first run of the season in the bottom of the inning. Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon) hit a deep fly ball to left center which allowed Nyles Nygaard (SR Western Oregon) to score easily on the sacrifice fly. Cowlitz trimmed the lead to one in the second when Nate Affonso (SO Clark College) drove in Ryan Kim (SO University of Portland) with an RBI double.

   Corvallis made it 4-2 with a lead-off home run to right field by Emilio Alcantar in the third.

   Cowlitz fought back in the fourth. Dane Stankiewicz (SO Grand Canyon) hit an RBI single to bring home Kim for the second time.

   The Knights first reliever Jacob Fricke picked up the win lasting 2.2 innings allowing no runs and just one hit with one walk. Starter Ross Massey pitched 4.1 innings allowing all three runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Louis Crow earned a six out save allowing a single hit.

   The Black Bears pitchers were once again the strength of their game. Starter David Wallum (JR Washington State) picked up the loss with five innings of work allowing all four runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Cobi Johnson (SR Northwest Nazarene) pitched very well out of the bullpen going the final four innings shuting out the Knights allowing just one hit while fanning four Corvallis batters.

   Cowlitz will give the ball to CJ Blowers (JR Edmonds College) for the get away game Sunday at 5:05 PM. Corvallis sends to the mound Jordan Horak (SR University of Portland).
