Longview, Wash.- Cowlitz (4-7) earned their first winning streak of the season Wednesday and also clinched their first series victory with their first shutout of the season against Kelowna (5-6) 2-0.
Yancy Bird (SO Lower Columbia College), Colten Barnes (SR Bellevue) and David Wallum (JR Washington State) combined for the shutout. Bird picked up the win improving his record to 1-1 pitching six innings. The Black Bears starter gave up just one hit with six strikeouts. Barnes pitched the seventh and eighth giving up only two hits while striking out three Falcons. Wallum made his first relief appearance of the season and earned the save giving up one hit along with one strikeout.
Offensively Cowlitz got the only run they would need in the third. Kyle Sandstrom (SO Lower Columbia College) led off the inning with a walk. Marco Valenzuela (SO Nevada) put two runners in scoring position with a double. After a strikeout, Jace McKinney (JR University of Portland) brought in Sandstrom with an RBI ground out to second base.
The Black Bears got some insurance in the sixth. Valenzuela hit an RBI single to score Kona Quiggle (SO Grand Canyon).
Bird had a no hitter going through 5.1 innings. Kelowna's best chance to score came in the third. The Falcons loaded the bases with one out but a strikeout and ground out to shortstop kept them off the board.
Cowlitz goes for their first sweep of the season Thursday. Bears ace Corbin Powers (R-SR LHP University of Portland) gets the ball against Cal Hehnke (JR RHP Nebraska-Omaha). Firstpitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
