Longview, Wash.- Kelowna (6-6) struck out 14 Cowlitz (4-8) batters Thursday to shutout the Black Bears 5-0.
The Falcons starter racked up nine strikeouts over six innings. Kelowna's two relievers sat down five more Black Bears to earn their first shutout of the season.
Kelowna opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI double. Later in the third a single drove in the Falcons second run. Kelowna effectively put the game away in the sixth with a two run homer to left field. The fifth run came across in the seventh with a bases loaded walk.
The Black Bears best chance to score came in the sixth. With runners on first and second with two outs Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) singled to right field. Jace McKinney (JR University of Portland) came home on the play but Austin Ingraham (SR TCU) was tagged out trying to go to third to end the inning.
Cowlitz ace Corbin Powers (R-SR University of Portland) took the loss dropping his record to 1-2. Powers pitched 5.1 innings giving up four runs on four hits while striking out seven Falcons. Christian Cosby (JR Chapman) lasted 1.2 innings giving up one unearned run with two strikeouts. KJ Strickland (JR Linn-Benton College) made his season debut pitching the eighth and ninth giving up one hit with one strikeout.
The Black Bears have Friday off before heading to Corvallis this weekend to face the Knights. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 6:40 PM.
