Black Bears Big Start Barely Enough To Hold Off Kitsap In 6-5 Win

Longview: July 3, 2012: The Cowlitz Black Bears had six runs in the first four innings and withstood a late Kitsap Blue Jackets rally to win 6-5 and move to 10-13 on the season in league play.
The Black Bears got three runs in the second inning, the first two after Justin Hazard (UCLA) laid down a perfect bunt and the Kitsap third baseman threw wild to first base, bringing in Ben Swinford (Cornell) and Derrick Salberg (Lower Columbia). Brian Carroll (UCLA) added an RBI single on a night in which he reached base five times, contributing three singles and two walks.

With a runner on second and no outs in the top of the ninth, Black Bears pitcher Tommy Nance (Santa Clara) picked the runner off on a pivotal play. Cole Irvin (Oregon) pitched six and two thirds innings and got the win.
