Four Black Bears Named To Play In WCL All-Star Game

Longview-Kelso, Washington, Tuesday, July 17, 2012: Four members of the Cowlitz Black Bears have been selected to participate in the 2012 West Coast League All-Star game, the league announced Tuesday. Austin Diemer (Cal State Fullerton), Cole Irvin (Oregon), and Felipe Perez (UCLA) were chosen for the West Division and will be joined by Mikey Murray (Hawaii Pacific), who was voted into the game via the fan vote.
“This will be a great event for all the players in the West Coast League,” said Black Bears general manager Grant Wilson.  “We are really excited to be able to send four representatives to Walla Walla where they will have a great experience.”
Murray, a left-handed pitcher, has won his last three starts and is 3-2 on the season with a 3.24 ERA. Murray has 29 strikeouts and just nine walks in 33 1/3 innings pitched.
Irvin and Perez, fresh off graduating from high school, have been dazzling on the mound for the Black Bears. Irvin is 2-1 with a 2.94 ERA in 30 2/3 innings; he leads the team with 29 strikeouts. Perez leads the Black Bears with 34 2/3 innings pitched and has a 4.15 ERA and has pinpoint command, allowing just five walks.
Diemer leads the Black Bears with a .330 average and has been a near-constant at the top of the order. Not only has he gotten many base hits, he leads the team with 13 walks and has been hit by 10 pitches, contributing to a whopping .430 on-base percentage. Diemer has also provided stellar defense in left field and has yet to make an error.
“We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of these players,” said Black Bears Manager Tim Matz. “They have each had great success and we’re very happy to have them represent the Black Bears organization.”
