GAME STORY. Corvallis, OR. June 15, 2013 -- The Cowlitz Black Bears (5-5) road woes continuednight as they began a three game series with the Corvallis Knights (5-5) with a 6-2 defeat.
Cowlitz starter Billy Sahlinger (Portland) had his second quality start against Knights, allowing one earned run on three hits through seven innings before giving way to Drew Merlow (Nevada).
The Black Bears took advantage of a pair of Corvallis errors to score a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, and had 2-1 lead as late as the sixth inning, but returned the favor as the Knights retook the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.
With the outcome still very much in doubt at 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, the Knights broke the game open with three runs on three hits, including a two-run double by Cody Lenahan.
Ryan Aguilar (Santa Ana) was two-for-four with a double and a run scored, and Austin Grebeck (Oregon), Slate Miller (Saddleback CC) and Nic Coffman (Lane CC) added hits for Cowlitz.
The Black Bears will try to put a stop to their three game skid, and Corvallis will be looking to extend its three game winning streak, when the teams face off in game two of the series on Sunday. Michael Sullivan is scheduled to get the start for the Black Bears opposite (LHP) Devon Barker and the Knights. Barker took a no-hitter to the final out against the Black Bears last week.
