Black Bears Lose Heartbreaker in 13


GAME STORY. Longview, WA. July 1, 2013.  The Black Bears (9-9) were unable to complete the sweep of the Victoria HarbourCats (11-6) Monday night from Story Field. Cowlitz gave up two runs in the 13th inning to fall 6-4 in the final regular season matchup between the two clubs.

Starter Trent Paddon (Oregon) struck out seven batters in just five innings but did not factor in the decision.

Kyle Knigge (LC State) led the charge offensively with a 3-for-6 performance, driving in three of the four runs for Cowlitz. In the series, Knigge batted .583 (7-for-12) with five runs driven in, four doubles and a home run.

Konnor Armijo (Utah) got the Black Bears on the board early with an RBI double, scoring Tanner Pinkston (Cal State Fullerton). An RBI double by Knigge gave Cowlitz another run, and a 2-0 lead, in the fourth 

After the HarbourCats got on the board with a run in the top of the seventh inning, Knigge drove in two more Black Bears runs in the bottom half of the frame, plating Austin Grebeck (Oregon) and Taylor Bryant (Cal State Fullerton).

With the Black Bears leading 4-1, Victoria battled back with three runs in the eighth inning to send the game to extra innings.  Each team put up zeroes until Victoria was able to score a pair of runs off of Black Bears reliever Trent Wilson (Grand Canyon University) with a triple by Alex Real.

Ryan Aguilar did not make his first plate appearance until the ninth inning, but still managed to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 17 games with a double in the 11th inning. 

Cowlitz will begin a three game series against the Kelowna Falcons beginning  with $2 Tuesday night from Story Field presented by Kelso Azteca. Zach Wilkins (1-0, 1.05 ERA) will make the start for the Black Bears opposite Marc-Andre Habeck (1-2, 5.47 ERA) and the Falcons. First pitch is scheduled for 6 :35 PM.
