GAME STORY. Longview, WA. July 2, 2013. The Black Bears (10-9) continued their success against teams from north of the border, winning game one of a three game series against the Kelowna Falcons (6-16) on night by the final score of 7-1.
The Black Bears got out to a fast start with two runs in the home half of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Austin Grebeck (Oregon) singled to ignite the Cowlitz offense, and ultimately scored on a hit by Danny Recio (UC San Diego). Ryan Aguilar (Santa Ana) singled to score Recio later in the inning.
As it turned out, two runs were all Cowlitz needed for a victory, but that didn't stop the offense from adding five more runs. Grebeck scored the second of his three runs in the third inning, and the Black Bears scored a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.
The Black Bears recorded 10 hits on the night, including two each by Grebeck, Recio, Aguilar and Corey VanDomelen (Linfield). Aguilar's 2-3 effort extended his streak of reaching base safely to 18 games.
Starter Zach Wilkins pitched seven innings of one run ball to earn his second win of the season, and Billy Sahlinger (U of Portland) recorded the final six outs, striking out four.
Game two of the three game series will feature a special post game fireworks show and Military Appreciation Night presented by Pacific Tech/Anderson Environmental Contracting/Western Fabrication and the United States Army. Dominic Mazza (0-1) will take the mound for the Black Bears opposite Jason Mouton (1-1) and the Falcons. First pitch is scheduled for .
