Game Story. Longview, WA. July 4, 2013. The Black Bears (12-9) completed their first series sweep of the season, with a 7-6 victory over the Kelowna Falcons (6-18) on Independence Day from Story Field.
Cowlitz was quick to take an early lead once again with a run in the first inning. Red hot Devyn Bolasky (UC Riverside) walked to lead things off for the Black Bears. Bolasky moved to third on a Konnor Armijo (Utah) double and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Slate Miller (Saddleback).
The Black Bears offense went quiet, however, and the Falcons had their first lead of the series, 2-1, in the third inning. Three more runs in the seventh inning gave the visitors a 5-1 cushion.
The Black Bears answered immediately. In the bottom of the seventh, Derrick Salberg (Lower Columbia) clubbed a three-run home run over the second level of signage in right field, scoring Taylor Bryant (CS Fullerton) and Marcus Blackmon (Mt Hood CC) and bringing the Black Bears within one.
After the Falcons turned to their bullpen, Bolasky walked, Cody Childs (Mt Hood CC) doubled and Armijo was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A walk by Devon Gradford (UC Santa Barbara) tied the game at 5-5 before Bryant stepped up for the second time in the inning. Bryant promptly singled home Childs and Armijo to cap the six run inning and give the Black Bears the lead for good.
The Falcons scored once in the top of the eighth and had the tying run on third base when Coach Tim Matz turned to closer Henry Omana. Omana struck out Falcons' leadoff hitter Joe Robbins to end the threat, and pitched a perfect ninth to preserve the win.
The Black Bears begin a six game road trip on Friday night against the Bellingham Bells. Jon Bjorklund (1-0) will take the mound for Cowlitz against the Bells for the first time this season.
