GAME STORY. Bellingham, WA. July 5, 2013- The Black Bears' bats stayed hot, but runs were at a premium on Friday night at Joe Martin Field, as Cowlitz fell to the Bellingham Bells, 3-1.
Kyle Knigge kick started the Black Bears' offense in the top of the first inning with a single, part of a three hit night for the LC State junior. He did not stay on base for long, as Devyn Bolasky (UC Riverside) singled to score Knigge and extended his own streak of reaching base safely to ten straight games.
That would be the last run for the Black Bears on the night, though, as they tallied eight hits but left seven runners stranded.
Jon Bjorkland (Mt. Hood CC) pitched five strong innings, allowing only three hits and three runs in the bottom of the third inning, but that was all that the Bells needed to steal the opening game of the series.
Ryan Aguilar (Santa Ana) extended his streak of reaching base safely to twenty straight games, and Brian McAfee (Cornell) pitched three perfect frames in relief.
The Black Bears will look to get back on track in game two against the Bells on Saturday night at Joe Martin Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. Be sure to tune in to Shane Downey for all the action on KEDO AM 1400 and streaming live from cowlitzblackbears.com.
