Game Story. Bellingham, WA. July 7, 2013- The Black Bears came up short for a third straight game on Sunday afternoon in Bellingham, as they fell to the Bells 10-3 and were swept for the first time this season.
The Black Bears jumped out to an early lead in a game. Paul Martinez (Oregon State) singled in the top of the second to start the momentum, and scored on a Slate Miller (Saddleback CC) single. Konnor Armijo (Utah), who had reached on a walk, scored later in the inning to give the Black Bears a 2-0 lead.
After the Bells answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning, Devyn Bolasky (UC Riverside) extended his hitting streak to eleven games with a single to lead off the fourth. He would later score on Martinez's second hit of the game.
The Black Bears were trailing by one run heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, when Bellingham exploded for five runs and a 9-3 lead. The Bells tallied one more in the bottom of the seventh, and captured both the win and the series sweep by a score of 10-3.
Cowlitz had nine hits on the afternoon, including three by Martinez and two by Armijo.
The Black Bears will head north of the border to take on the Kelowna Falcons in a three game series beginning tomorrow night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm.
