Black Bears

Elks Top Black Bears 6-2 in Opener

Game Story. Longview, WA.  July 19, 2013.  The Black Bears (18-16) came up short in game one of a three game series with the Bend Elks (21-14), losing 6-2 on Friday night at Story field.

The visiting Elks put two runs on the board in the first inning against Cowlitz starter Trent Paddon, but the Black Bears offense was quick to respond. With Ryan Aguilar on first base, Devyn Bolasky launched a ball to the right center field wall for a triple. Danny Recio battled Elks starter Adam Grantham to a productive out, scoring Bolasky.

Bend added two runs in the third inning on a Cullen O'Dwyer two-run home run, and two more in the seventh.

The Black Bears offense  was unable to generage consistent pressure.  Four Elks pitchers combined to allow the Black Bears just two hits for the game, with the last one being Aguilar's third inning single.

The Black Bears will look to bounce back in game two Saturday night, with All-Star selection Zach Wilkins (2-1, 3.19 ERA) taking the mound for Cowlitz. The Elks will send Taylor Elman (3-0, 3.39 ERA) to the hill, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35.
