Rogues Outlast Black Bears, 9-3

Game Story. Medford, OR. July 28, 2013. The Cowlitz Black Bears looked to get back on track tonight in their second game against the Medford Rogues but the offense never really got going as the Black Bears left 13 runners stranded and fell 9-3.  The loss tonight drops Cowlitz to 20-21 on the season, five games out of a playoff spot.

All-Star Zach Wilkins got the start and pitched 6 innings, struck 1 out and gave up 7 runs on 6 hits in a losing effort.  Drew Merlo gave up two runs on three hits in the 7th inning and Kody Watts struck out one and kept the Rogues scoreless in the 8th.

The Black Bears took the early 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI double from Danny Recio that scored Devyn Bolasky.  With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the 3rd, Rogues pitcher Jamie Flynn walked Johnny Reece with the bases loaded, scoring Derrick Salberg and putting the Black Bears up 2-1.

Wilkins retired 7 straight batters after giving up a triple to the first batter he faced, but walked two and hit another batter to load the bases before surrendering a bases clearing double that put the Rogues ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the 3rd.  The Rogues would tack on another before the end of the 3rd inning.

Trailing 7-2 in the top of the 7th, the Black Bears showed some life as Dillon Ness singled to send Salberg home and close the gap to 7-3, but could not complete the comeback.  Medford tacked on another 2 runs in the closing innings.

The final game of the series will be Monday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 from Harry and David Field.  Stuart Fewel will make his season debut on the mound for Cowlitz as he returns to the Black Bears and Medford will counter with Mac Acker (4-3).  Tune in for all the action with Shane Downey beginning at 4:55 p.m. on KEDO AM 1400 and streaming live on
