PRESS RELEASE: Longview-Kelso, Washington,
Friday, February 21, 2014:
The Cowlitz Black Bears announced the signings of Cal Poly Pomona players Cody Ponce (RHP, So.), Brennen Salgado (C/OF, Jr.), and Jake Menzhuber (LHP, R-Fr.). The Broncos have started the 2014 season 10-1, and currently are ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division II baseball.
Ponce, the 6-5, 235 lb. right-hander, was a standout reliever for the Broncos during his freshman campaign, being named to the NCAA All-West Region Second Team and to the All-CCAA Second Team. Ponce finished with a 5-2 record while adding six saves, which matched the program’s single-season record. The Upland, Ca. native led the team with a 2.23 ERA and was second in strikeouts with 43. He has started strong in 2014, and has yet to give up a run through 11 innings of work.
Salgado is a versatile junior from Glendora, California, with the ability to produce from behind the plate and from the outfield. He compiled a .351 batting average as a sophomore, following a freshman season during which he saw 22 starts and hit .247. So far in the 2014 season Salgado has been the Broncos primary starting designated hitter.
The left-handed Menzhuber is a red-shirt freshman from Capistrano Valley High School. He has come out of the gates strong to start of the 2014 season, making four relief appearances in the club’s first 11 games, giving up only three hits and one earned run in five innings of work.
