Black Bears Continue Winning Ways

The Black Bears continued their winning ways Saturday night, defeating the visiting Medford Rogues 4-3 at Story Field.

The Rogues jumped to an early leadoff batter, Spenser Smith reached base on an error and later scored on a ground out.  Black Bears starter Colton Krueger (Clark College) worked out of the jam, however, keeping the deficit at 1-0.

After two scoreless innings, Cowlitz would get on the board in the third. A single by Seaver Whalon (Lower Columbia College), preceded a double off the bat of Ryan Aguilar (Santa Ana), putting runners at second and third with one out. A wild pitch scored Whalon, and Aguilar followed on a single by Linfield's Corey VanDomelen to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.

Medford tied the game in the fifth, but re-took the lead with two runs in the seventh.  A Chris Iriart (Orange Coast) sacrifice fly drove in VanDomelen, and an RBI single from Austin Baker (Arkansas St.) scored Trevor Lane (Lower Columbia College).  Baker added the defensive play of the night with a diving catch on a sinking line drive to lead off the Rogues' half of the eighth.

Krueger scattered four hits allowing just one earned run in 6 2/3 innings.  He was relieved by Grant Gamble (Nebraska) in the seventh.  Gamble struck out out a pair in an inning and a third to get the victory in relief.

Returning for his second season with Cowlitz, Henry Omana (Cal St. Fullerton) entered the game  with the Black Bears clinging to a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth. Omana secured the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, finishing things off by striking out Rogues clean-up batter Nathan Etheridge for the save.

Ryan Aguilar collected three hits and scored a run from the top of the lineup, where he excelled  throughout the 2013 season.

The Black Bears will wrap up their opening home stand at Story Field Sunday as they go for the sweep over Medford. The first 500 people in attendance will receive a Black Bears 2014 magnetic schedule presented by Aaron's. Jake Corn, who will be headed to Oregon in the fall, will take the mound for Cowlitz opposite Jackson Bertch for Medford. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05.
