Black Bears

Black Bears Clobber HarbourCats

The Black Bears took the lead early and continued to add on throughout the game to even up the series against the HarbourCats with an 11-4 victory, Wednesday from Sports Traders Diamond in Victoria.

The offense staked starter Billy Sahlinger (U or Portland) to a 2-0 lead before Victoria took an at bat.  With two outs in the Black Bears' half of the first, four straight batters reached for Cowlitz, highlighted by a 2-RBI single from Trevor Lane (Illinois-Chicago), driving in Austin Baker (Arkansas St.) and Daniel Orr (Corban).

Victoria cut the lead in half with a run of their own in the second inning before the Black Bears would break open the game in the fourth inning.

Singles by Lane, Ryan Aguilar (U of Arizona), Corey VanDomelen (Linfield) and Casey Worden (Saddleback), combined with a walk, a hit batter and an error pushed five runs across for the Black Beats to give them a commanding 7-1 lead.

The offense was far from done, adding on four runs in the fifth inning.  A walk to Joey Greco (Missouri Baptist), and sacrifice and a Cooper Mickleson (Lower Columbia) single put runners at the corners to start the inning.  A pair of errors and a 2-RBI single by Orr later, and the Black Bears had put the game out of reach. Orr reached base safely in each of his four plate appearances.

The Black Bears were held scoreless the remainder of the game, but had given their pitching staff plenty of room with which to work.

Sahlinger, returning for his second season with the Black Bears, earned his first win of the season, allowing three runs in seven innings and exiting with an 11-3 lead.

Kohl Hoestert (Oregon) made his debut for Cowlitz, striking out three in his two innings of work and allowing only a solo home run to Victoria shortstop Alex DeGoti in the ninth inning.

Cowlitz managed to score their 11 runs without an extra base hit in the game. In each of the first two games in the series, the team with the most hits has come up on the losing end.

Both teams will be back in action for the rubber match in the series on Thursday night.
