The Black Bears combined a steady offensive attack with another quality start by Billy Sahlinger to break a six game losing streak Tuesday night at Story Field against the Kitsap Blue Jackets.
Cowlitz came out of the dugout hot in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly to center field by Chris Iriart (U of Houston) to drive home Trevor Lane (Illinois-Chicago) to take the lead 1-0. The pattern repeated in the second, as a single to left field by Kyle Hunt (Nevada) scored Brennen Salgado (Cal Poly Pomona) for the 2-0 lead.
The Blue Jackets tied the score in the top of the third with a two-run triple by Nick Choruby. Sahlinger did now allow any further damage, and the Black Bears answered immediately, with a run in the bottom of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly to center field by Jonathon Serven (Long Beach State) that drove in Corey VanDomelen (Linfield).
In the fourth, Casey Worden's (Saddleback CC) first home-run of the season, and the Black Bears' second in two nights, made the score 4-2.
A final Cowlitz run in the sixth finished the scoring, courtesy of an Austin Baker (Arkansas St) RBI single to score Salgado.
The 5-2 cushion was plenty for Sahlinger and the Black Bears' bullpen. Sahlinger took the win to go 3-0 on the season, allowing only two runs and three hits in his six innings pitched. Scott Serigstad (Grand Canyon University) and J.J. Franklin (Cal Poly Pomona) were effective in relief, allowing only two combined hits in their collective three innings pitched.
Cowitz got offensive contributions up and down the lineup, pounding out 10 hits in total, including two each by VanDomelen and Salgado.
