After the Black Bears and HarbourCats combined for 25 hits and 14 runs in the opener of their three game series, pitching dominated game two, as the Black Bears came away with a 3-2 victory at Story Field.
Trevor Lane (Illinois-Chicago) put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first after advancing on a walk, stealing second and reaching home on a Chris Iriart (U of Houston) putout for the 1-0 lead. The Harbour Cats tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth , where the score would remain through the middle innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Harbour Cats took the lead 2-1, but the Black Bears responded in the bottom of the inning with a home run by Taylor Bryant (Cal State Fullerton), his first of the season, to tie the score.
JJ Franklin ( set down the HarbourCats in order in the top of the ninth, setting the stage for bottom of the ninth. Chris Iriart (U of Houston) reached on an error to open the inning, and Joey Greco (Missouri Baptist) followed with a single. A Casey Worden sacrifice put both runners in scoring position, and an intentinoal walk to Brendan Salgado (Cal Poly Pomona) loaded the bases. With one out, an error on a Jonathan Serven (Long Beach St.) ground ball scored Iriart for the 3-2 victory.
Cowlitz was led by multi-hit nights from Bryant and Greco.
Franklin took the win, in relief of starter Colton Krueger (Clark College), who scattered three hits and one run over six and two-thirds innings, and Joe Reta (Oregon), who gave up one run on one hit to set the table for Franklin.
