Black Bears

HarbourCats Take Series Finale, 9-8

The Black Bears concluded their series with the Victoria HarbourCats on Sunday afternoon at Story Field with a 13 inning marathon, coming up on the short end of a 9-8 score.

In a game that had changes of fate throughout, the first run of the day came simply enough on a single by Trevor Lane (llinois-Chicago) do drive in Nick Funyak (Puget Sound). Black Bears starter Chris Castellanos (Stanford) was perfect through three innings, and surrendered a lone run in the top of the fourth on an infield single and a triple, tying the score at 1-1. He was relieved by Kohl Hostert (Oregon) after the fourth.

The Black Bears added three in the home half of the fourth, starting with a two run single to right field by Funyak to score Joey Greco (Missouri Baptist) and Jonathan Serven (Long Beach St.). Lane's second hit of the night drove home Funyak and gave Cowlitz a 4-1 lead at the end of the fourth. A groundout by Serven plated Brennen Salgado (Cal Poly Pomona) in the bottom of the fifth, expanding the lead to 5-1.

The lead evaporated in the top of the sixth, in a sign of things to come, as the HarbourCats scored four runs on four hits and a walk to tie the game at 5-5.

The tie was short lived, however, as Salgado singled to right field to drive in Derek Rustich (UC Santa Barbara) to take back the lead 6-5. A Serven single in the bottom of the seventh scored Daniel Orr (Corban) to once again briefly extend the lead to 7-5, but the visitors added one in each of the eighth and ninth to send the game into extra innings.

The HarbourCats took the lead in the top of the tenth, 8-7, but an RBI single by Kyle Hunt (Nevada) tied the game again 8-8.

The game remained tied until the top of the thirteenth with a HarbourCats run off a bases loaded walk for the final 9-8 score. The 4:25 game time was the Black Bears' longest of the season.

Catcher Nick Funyak had an exceptional game, going two for four at-bat, with two runs, two RBIs, and a sacrifice bunt Sunday night. Lane and Salgado also added two hits each.

Harbour Cats pitcher Preston Ryan took the win, while closing pitcher Jake Menzheuber (Cal Poly Pomona) took the loss.
