Black Bears

Fireworks Continue as Black Bears Top Lobos, 11-3

Black Bears' bats were as spectacular as the post game fireworks display on Wednesday night, pounding out 13 hits, including home runs by new signee Elliott Cary (Oregon State) and Austin Baker (Arkansas St), defeating the Portland Lobos 11-3.

The Bears scored early in the game thanks to single to right field by Jonathan Serven (Long Beach St.) to bring home Cary and give the Black Bears and the 1-0 lead. Cary had singled earlier in the inning, in his first plate appearance as a Black Bear.  The Lobos responded with two runs in the top of the second, but the Black Bears responded with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. Kort Peterson (UCLA), Kyle Hunt (U. of Nevada Reno), and Caleb Hamilton (Oregon St.) singled in the inning, which was highlighted by Cary's two run blast, giving the Black Bears a 5-2 lead.

The Bears put an additional run on the board in the bottom of the third from a Peterson double that drove home Nick Funyak (Puget Sound) for the 6-2 lead.  Baker’s second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth gave the Black Bears the 7-2 edge at the end of the sixth.

An eventful seventh inning gave the Bears the 11-2 lead, as three walks and singles by Daniel Orr (Corban), Seaver Whalen (Lower Columbia College) and Taylor Bryant (Cal State Fullerton) led to four runs.

The Lobos put an additional run on the board in the top of the eighth for the final 11-3 score.

Cary was impressive in his debut, going two for five including the home run.  Orr and Peterson also contributed two hits each to the cause.  Relief pitcher Kohl Hostert (Oregon St.) took the win with three innings pitched, allowing only one hit.

The Bears hit the road this week, starting with a 7:05 game at Bellingham Thursday night. Be sure to tune in online where our very own “Sugar Daddy” Shane will be broadcasting live from Bellingham.
