Black Bears In Control, Win 8-3

The Black Bears offense got an early start on  Saturday night, and never looked back  as Cowlitz won 8-3.

Kitsap put the first run on the board in the top of the first, taking the lead 1-0 heading into the second inning. The Bears quickly responded with three of their own runs in the bottom of the second. Consecutive singles by Derrick Rustich, Jonathan Serven and Austin Baker loaded the bases.  Then, with Kyle Hunt at the plate, all three scored on consecutive wild pitches, giving Cowlitz a 3-1 lead at the end of the second.

Kitsap put another run on the board in the fourth to trail the Bears 3-2, and the Black Bears' offense again answered, this time with a single to left field by Brennen Salgado to drive home Kort Peterson for the 4-2 lead.

A Corey VanDomelen RBI single made the lead 5-2 at the end of the fifth, before the Black Bears put the game away with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Cowlitz pounded out 10 hits in total, with Baker, VanDomelen, Brennan Salgado and Kort Peterson contributing two each.

Starting pitcher Zebastian Valenzuela took the win, pitching six innings and allowing six hits and only one earned run. Henry Omana continued his string of impressive appearances, allowing one run and striking out four in two innings of work, and Scott Serigstad finished the game on the mound with a scoreless ninth.
