Big Innings Propel Black Bears To 15-4 Win

The Black Bears built on the momentum of their walk-off win the previous night, posting a pair of big innings and cruising to a 15-4 win over the Klamath Falls Gems Tuesday night at David Story Field.
The Bears started the game of  scoring by  manufacturing a run in the bottom of the second, as a fielder's choice by Brennan Salgado drove home Chris Iriart for the 1-0 lead. After the Gems tied the score in the third, a blistering single by Iriart scored Taylor Bryant and Austin Baker for the 3-1 lead, and a towering two-run home run by Caleb Hamilton, his first of the season, drove home Iriart to make the score 5-1.
The Gems responded in the top of the fourth with their own two-run home run to trail the Bears 5-3 at the end of the fifth, and brought the game within one at  5-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Black Bears exploded for six runs to put the game out of reach.  A Brennan Salgado single scored Corey VanDomelen, and three subsequent runs scored on a pair of walks and a hit batter. Finally, a two RBI single by Taylor Bryant scored Nick Funyak and Elliot Cary to give the Black Bears an 11-4 lead.
The Gems put one more run on the board in the top of the eighth off of a bases loaded walk, but Lars Rider entered the game with bases still loaded and no out, and closed the door without allowing any additional runs.
The Bears finished the scoring with  four more runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a Derek Rustich double with the bases loaded.
Starting pitcher Chris Castellanos went five innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out one. Reilly Newman made his Black Bears debut Tuesday night, pitching two innings allowing only one hit and no runs. Rider pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits and no runs.
Hamilton led the Black Bears with three hits, including the home run, and Bryant and Iriart added multi-hit nights.
The Black Bears take on the Klamath Falls Gems Wednesday night for the final game of this series. Billy Sahlinger (2-0, 4.98 ERA) will face Ryan Strombom (4-0, 2.20 ERA) at the mound, looking to sweep the Gems. Wednesday night is Fibre Federal Family Night, where all Fibre Federal members will receive $5 off their admission ticket with their membership card.
