The Black Bears went to extra innings for the second consecutive night on Thursday, falling to the Nortwest Collegiate Baseball League All Stars by an 8-5 score in 10 innings.
Cowlitz showed the physical effects of the previous night's 15-inning marathon, as NCBL got out to an early lead, scoring two in the second and two more in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, an RBI triple by Elliot Cary made the score 4-1, and Cary later scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to 4-2.
NCBL added another run to the board in the top of the seventh to lead the Bears 5-2.
In what has become a hallmark, Cowlitz roared back in the bottom of ninth. A Scott Serigstad RBI single narrowed the gap to 5-3, and Cary's second RBI hit of the night made it a one run game. The Black bears tied the score when Corey Van Domelen's hustle on a ground ball to second induced an error, scoring Serigstad to tie the game.
NCBL scored three runs in the tenth, with the big damage courtesy of a two-run, Cody McDonald triple. Cowlitz mounted a threat in their half of the tenth with a leadoff double by Brennan Salgado, but were unable to overcome the deficit.
The Black Bears hit the road Friday for six games, starting in Wenatchee against the Apple Sox with first pitch at 7:05. Be sure to tune in online at www.kedoam.com or am1400 for a live broadcast by our very own Shane Downey.
