Gresham, Ore.- Runs were hard to come by in game two Tuesday night but Gresham still came out on top 3-1 to take the series.
The Grey Wolves didn't get a hit until the third inning but when they did they took the only lead they would need. Jordan Barchus hit a lead-off single followed two batters later with another single from Jeff Mitchell. The next batter Drew Curtis hit a two-run double to deep right center field to give Gresham a 2-0 advantage.
Cowlitz answered in the top of the sixth with a single run. Weston Hatten (SO, Washington State) drove Andy Armstrong (FR, Oregon State) in with an RBI sacrifice fly.
But in the bottom of the seventh Gresham got an insurance run. Konnor Zickefoose hit an RBI single to score Mitchell.
Will Matthiessen, who was the starting third baseman in game one, came on in the ninth inning and got Hatten to fly out to center field, Colin Winn (SO, Santa Ana JC) to ground out to short and Tim Jones (SO, Northwest Nazarene) to pop out to short to earn the save.
Grey Wolves starter Andrew Heideman pitched eight strong innings allowing just the one earned run on six hits while striking out two batters. Black Bears starter Seth Rayburn (Mt. Hood College), potentially starting for the last time on his home field, took the loss to even his record on the year at 1-1. Rayburn went six innings giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out two batters looking.
Chandler Greenfield (FR, Washington State) and newcomer Rian Bassett (FR, Clark College) each pitched an inning of relief.Greenfield gave up the third Gresham run.
The Black Bears will try and salvage a game at Gresham on Wednesday. First pitch is again scheduled for 7:05 PM. Cowlitz will send to the mound Damon Jones (SO, Washington State) to go against Aaron Shoup (Saint Martin's).
