Thirteen Black Bears Players Taken In MLB Draft

The Cowlitz Black Bears are very proud to announce that 13 players were selected in the 2016 Major League Draft.  This is the largest draft class of current and former Black Bear players ever produced.

“Obviously, we are extremely happy for all of these young men on this momentous day in their careers,” said Jim Appleby, Cowlitz Black Bear General Manager.  “Our entire Black Bears family looks forward to following their baseball paths for years to come.”

Here is a list of Black Bears players taken in the draft:

Right handed pitcher Shane Bieber (2014 - UC Santa Barbara) went 122nd overall, in the 4th round, to the Cleveland Indians.  

Left handed pitcher Cole Irvin (2012 - Oregon), 137th overall, in the 5th round, to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Left handed pitcher Trevor Lane (2014 - Illinois Chicago) was the 308th pick, in the 10th round, to the New York Yankees.  

Right handed pitcher Scott Serigstad (2014 - CS Fullerton) went 441st, in the 15th round, to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Catcher Cooper Hummel (2013 - University of Portland) was the 531st pick, in the 18th round, also to the Milwaukee Brewers.  

Left handed pitcher Layne Bruner (2015 - Washington State) went 541st, in the 18th round, to the Baltimore Orioles.

Outfielder Austin Grebeck (2013 - Oregon) was the 627th pick, in the 21st round, to the Seattle Mariners.  

Outfielder Isaac Benard (2015 - Mt Hood CC) was the 690th pick, in the 23rd round, to the Tampa Bay Rays.   

Shortstop Caleb Hamilton (2014 - Oregon State) was the 693rd pick, in the 23rd round, to the Minnesota Twins.  

Cort Peterson (2014 - UCLA) was the 703rd pick, in the 23rd round, to the Kansas City Royals.

Right handed pitcher Rian Bassett (2016 - Clark College), who appeared for the Black Bears this year, was taken 854th, in the 28th round, by the Chicago Cubs.  

Three-time Black Bear, Infielder Ryan Aguilar (2013-14-15 - Arizona) was taken 921st overall, in the 31st round, to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Rounding out the day, right handed pitcher Brian McAfee (2013 - Duke) was the 1140th pick, in the 38th round, to the Tampa Bay Rays.
