Power surge

Bremerton, Wash.- Nyles Nygaard (SO, Washington) hit a grand slam and Erek Bolton (IN-FR, Elk Grove HS) hit a solo homer Tuesday as the Black Bears (6-4) hung on to beat Kitsap (3-6) 11-7.

Cowlitz jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the second inning. Jack Reisinger (SO, Seattle University) hit a two-run single to score Andy Armstrong (FR, Oregon State) and Nygaard in the top of the first.

The Black Bears loaded the bases in the second. After two force outs at home Nygaard stepped up to the plate and hit the first grand slam of the season over the left field wall to make it 6-0.

But Kitsap didn't quit and scored one run in the third and fourth to get into the game.

The Black Bears answered in the fifth. Bolton hit his first home run of the season over the left field fence as well.

Kitsap kept things interesting by getting the run back in the bottom half of the inning.

In the sixth the Blue Jackets narrowed the gap to 7-4 on an RBI groundout from Taylor Adams.

The Black Bears then put together their second four-run inning of the game to pull away again 11-4. Yeager Taylor (FR, UC Riverside) hit a two-run triple to right field and scored when the Blue Jackets threw the ball away into their dugout. Later Nygaard drove in his fifth run of the game with an RBI double that scored Armstrong.

Kitsap answered with three more runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-7. But that's as close as they would get as Jacob Worrell (JR, UC Riverside) and Jake Hawken (SO, University of Portland) pitched the eighth and ninth innings respectively to shut the door.

Black Bears starter Seth Rayburn (SO, Tennessee-Martin) improved his record to 2-1 lasting five innings while giving up three runs on seven hits. Kitsap starter Eli Fultz dropped his record to 0-2 pitching just two innings giving up six runs on seven hits.

The win extended the Black Bears record against Kitsap to 4-0 this season.
