Victoria, B.C.- After a seven-seven doubleheader the day before and a trip to British Columbia in the morning the Black Bears (6-7) just couldn't compete with the Victoria Harbourcats (9-3) and lost game one 11-1.
Victoria struck right away in the bottom of the first inning. The lead-off batter Jarron Silva reached on an infield single, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error from Cowlitz starting pitcher Damon Jones (SO, Washington State). Silva then scored on a passed ball from the catcher Erek Bolton (IN-FR, Elk Grove HS).
The Harbourcats tagged the Black Bears for three more runs in the second to make it 4-0.
Cowlitz got into the game in the top of the third. Tim Jones (SO, Northwest Nazarene) led off the inning with a double. After Jones advanced to third on a groundout by Michael Forgione (JR, University of Portland) he scored on a wild pitch from Victoria starter Josh Mitchell.
Victoria got the run back in the fifth. Griffin Andreychuk hit a one out solo home run over the left field wall to make it 5-1.
The sixth inning is where things got out of hand for Cowlitz. The Harbourcats batted around scoring six times on five hits. The highlight of the inning was a bases clearing knock for the number nine hitter Cameron Cannon.
Mitchell pitched seven strong innings moving to 1-0 on the season. Mitchell struck out one Cowlitz batter each inning for seven total. Skyler Henderson continued the strong pitching striking out two in the final two innings.
Jones took the loss dropping his record to 2-1. Jones lasted five innings giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out four.
The Harbourcats tied a franchise record with their ninth win in a row. Cowlitz is on their longest losing streak of the season losing their last three.
The Black Bears will try and get back on track with another 6:35 PM first pitch in game two. David Appleby (FR, RHP Utah) gets the baseball against Jack Wolger (IN-FR, LHP CAL).
