Corvallis, Ore.- Corvallis (3-4, 21-13) used a five run fifth to best Cowlitz (2-5, 14-20) in game one 6-1.
Kyle Nobach broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI sacrifice fly. Two batters later Andy Atwood hit an RBI single to double the Knights lead. Roman Garcia hit a two-run triple to break the game open at 4-0. The next batter Nick Kahle finished off the inning with an RBI double.
The Black Bears got into the game in the seventh as Yeager Tayor (SO, UC Riverside) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. With runners on first and second Andy Armstrong (IN-FR, Oregon State) hit a grounder to short stop. The relay from the second baseman Matt Kelly to first was wide to the left of Michael Farris which allowed Taylor to score.
But Corvallis got the five run lead back in the eighth. Nobach drove in his second run of the game with a single to make it 6-1.
Knights starter Aaron Pope earned the win pitching six innings of three hit shutout baseball while striking out four batters. Chandler Greenfield (SO, Washington State) took the loss going 4 2/3 innings giving up five runs, none of which were earned, on four hits while striking out five. Chris Burkholder earned a nine out save, his first of the season, giving up one unearned run on no hits while striking out four.
The Knights are now in sole possession of fourth place in the South Division second half standings.
The Black Bears will try and send the series to a rubber match Sunday in game two at 6:40 PM. Jacob Worrell (SR, RHP UC Riverside) will get his first start of the season against Brandon Cutsford (SO, RHP Treasure Valley CC).
