Wolves pounce on Bears

Gresham, Ore.- Gresham (2-2) jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a game one victory over Cowlitz (0-4) 11-5.

   The Black Bears did open the scoring which was their first lead of the season. Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) drove in Nyles Nygaard (SR Western Oregon) with an RBI single.

   But the Greywolves answered with a six run bottom of the first in which they sent all nine batters to the plate. Gresham added one more in the second.

   Cowltiz fought back in the third to make it 7-2 when Pearson hit his second RBI single in as many at bats this time bringing home Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon). Pearson is the first Black Bear with a multiple RBI game this season.

   Gresham increased their lead in the fifth with an RBI double. In the seventh the Greywolves all but put the game away with a two run home run over the right field wall. Each team scored a run in the eighth to make it an 11-3 game. Kona Quiggle (SO Grand Canyon) did the damage for Cowlitz with an RBI double. Quiggle drove in two more on a single in the ninth to make it 11-5.

   Gresham's one and only reliever Dakota Weindel earned the victory pitching the final five innings. Cowlitz starter Cole Henderson (SO Nevada) lasted only 1.1 innings giving up seven runs on four hits with two strikeouts and five walks. Zac Horne (SO Lower Columbia College) was first out of the bullpen and went 3.1 innings giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Corbin Powers (R-SR University of Portland) got the Bears out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth striking out the one batter he saw. Lastly Cobi Johnson (SR Northwest Nazarene) pitched the final three innings giving up three runs on three hits while striking out two Greywolves.

   Cowlitz continues to search for their first win of the season Tuesday in game two. Austin Merrill (SO RHP Chapman) is scheduled to make his Black Bears debut against Chris Stone (SO RHP Mt Hood College). First pitch again is at 6:35 PM.
