Extra inning magic

Gresham, Ore.- Cowlitz (1-4) earned their first win of the 2017 season in a back-and-forth game two against Gresham (2-3) 8-7 in 11 innings.

   With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the 11th Jace McKinney (JR Mt Hood College) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field which brought home Marco Valenzuela (SO Nevada) for the go ahead run. Joey Morris (SO University of Portland) came in for the bottom of the inning and induced a flyout to left field and two strikeouts to earn the save.

   The game was tied three times and there were two lead changes. Cowlitz scored three times in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead. With two runners aboard McKinney reached on an error from the Gresham third baseman which scored Tyson Cronin (JR Pierce College). The next batter Dane Stankiewicz (SO Grand Canyon) hit an RBI single to bring home Josh Palmquist (JR Pierce College). Later Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) also hit an RBI single scoring Stankiewicz. 

   Christian Cosby (JR Chapman) came in for the bottom of the ninth to try and nail down the save. With a runner at first and one out Gresham got a fly ball to land in very shallow center field to tie the game. But Cosby pitched the tenth inning striking out two Greywolves to earn the win.

   Cowlitz scored first for the second time in the series. Pearson came home on a wild pitch in the second. In the third Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon) hit the Bears first home run of the season to left field which made it 3-0.

   Gresham fought back in the bottom of the inning scoring six times on five hits while sending 12 batters to the plate to make it 6-3.

   Cronin narrowed the gap in the fourth with an RBI double to bring home Valenzuela.

   The rubber match is Wednesday night at 6:35 PM. Cowlitz sends to the hill Yancy Bird (SO RHP Lower Columbia College). Opposing him for the Greywolves is Andrew Hansen (SO RHP St. Mary's).
