Black Bears

Coming up just short

Gresham, Ore.- Gresham (3-3) broke a 1-1 deadlock in the seventh inning and hung on the rest of the way to take the series against Cowlitz (1-5) with a 3-1 win.

The Greywolves got an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to take their second lead 2-1. The Black Bears had a chance to tie the game in the eighth. Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon) led off the inning drawing a four pitch walk. Two batters later Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) drove the ball to right field. The relay from the Gresham second baseman was on target and Williams was tagged out at home.

Gresham added an insurance run in the eighth with a ground ball to second. The Black Bears were set down in order in the ninth.

Gresham earned the initial lead for the first time in the series in the third. An error by the Cowlitz third baseman came back to haunt the Bears as the next batter drove the runner in with a double.

Cowlitz earned their only run in the fourth. Kona Quiggle (SO Grand Canyon) began the rally with a double. The next batter Pearson drove Quiggle in with a single.

Yancy Bird (SO Lower Columbia College) had an exceptional start on the mound. Bird lasted the longest of any starter so far this season going seven innings. Bird took the loss giving up two runs, only one earned, on four hits with five strikeouts. Thomas Gomez (SO Lower Columbia College) made his season debut and pitched the eighth. Gomez gave up one run on two hits with one walk.

Cowlitz looks to get back on the winning track Thursday when they open up their longest homestand of the season against the Bend Elks. Corbin Powers (R-SR LHP University of Portland) gets the start with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM.
