Offensive explosion

Longview, Wash.- Cowlitz (2-5) earned their first home victory of the season by scoring seven unanswered runs against Bend (2-2) to take game one 7-3.

After the Elks scored on a wild pitch in the first inning Cowlitz answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half. Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon) hit the first triple of the season to score Dane Stankiewicz (SO Grand Canyon). The next batter Kona Quiggle (SO Grand Canyon) drove in Williams with an RBI double. Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) kept the rally going with an RBI single.

Cowlitz made it 4-1 in the third. Pearson grounded into a 4-6-3 double play scoring Williams.

The Black Bears put the game out of reach in the fifth. Three consecutive RBI singles from Pearson, Marco Valenzuela (SO Nevada) and Tyson Cronin (JR Pierce College) increased the lead to 7-1.

Bend struck back in the sixth with two runs but that's as close as they got. Davis Baillie (R-SO Washington State) pitched the seventh and eighth giving up only one hit with one strikeout. Joey Morris (SO University of Portland) got the Elks in order in the ninth with a groundout, flyout and strikeout.

Starter Corbin Powers (R-SR University of Portland) turned in another strong six inning effort improving his record to 1-1. Powers gave up all three runs on four hits while striking out nine Elks.

The Bears turned out 13 hits which is a season high. Williams is the first batter this season to record four hits in a game. The heart of the order did the bulk of the damage with a combined eight hits and four RBI.

David Wallum (JR RHP Washington State) gets the game two start for the Bears against Caleb Henry (SR RHP Corban). Time of first pitch is again at 6:35 PM.
