Longview, Wash.- Bend (3-2) shutout Cowlitz (2-6) in game two 7-0 to even the series.
The Elks starter no hit the Black Bears until the sixth when Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon) finally broke through with a single. Cowlitz only got one more hit from Dane Stankiewicz (SO Grand Canyon) in the eighth.
Offensively Bend opened the scoring with three runs in the third on an RBI groundout and an inside the park two run home run. They pushed two more across in the fourth with an RBI groundout and an RBI sacrifice fly. The Elks scored one more in the fifth with an RBI double. Finally they put up their seventh run in the next inning with an RBI single.
Cowlitz starter David Wallum (JR Washington State) took the loss pitching 3.2 innings to drop his record to 0-2. Wallum gave up five runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Nick Strange (JR Tacoma College) pitched the next two innings giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits with four strikeouts. Zac Horne (SO Lower Columbia College) lasted 2.1 innings giving up two hits with three strikeouts. Finally Thomas Gomez (SO Lower Columbia College) pitched the ninth retiring the Elks in order with one strikeout.
It was the second time the Black Bears have been shutout this season. The loss broke up a string of six straight wins against Bend dating back to last season.
Cole Henderson (SO RHP Nevada) will try and get the rubber match Saturday for the Bears on the hill. His opponent will be Kyle Cantu (SR RHP Morehead State). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
