Guns silenced

Longview, Wash.- Cowlitz moved to 2-0 in exhibition games this season by shutting out the West Coast Guns 7-0.

   The Black Bears opened the scoring with four runs in the third inning sending ten batters up. With the bases loaded and one out Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon) came through with an RBI single. Two batters later Ryan Kim (SO University of Portland), back in the lineup after a hand injury, hit a two run single. The next batter Kyle Sandstrom (SO Lower Columbia College) made it 4-0 with an RBI single.

   Cowlitz put the game out of reach with three more runs in the sixth. Nate Affonso (SO Clark College) drove in a pair with a double. Dane Stankiewicz (SO Grand Canyon) then made it 7-0 with a single.

   The first relief pitcher of the game for Cowlitz Thomas Gomez (SO Lower Columbia College) earned the win. Gomez came in at the top of the third and pitched the next three innings. Gomez gave up only one hit and had one strikeout, one walk and one hit batter.

    Zach Horne (SO Lower Columbia College) started the game and didn't give up a hit in the first two innings with one strikeout. Joey Morris (SO University of Portland), Tyson Cronin (JR Pierce College), CJ Blowers (JR Edmonds College) and Christian Cosby (JR Chapman) all pitched one inning to end the game. 

   Sandstrom followed up a 3-for-3 debut last night for Cowlitz with a 3-for-4 day with a stolen base, one run scored and an RBI.

   The Black Bears beat the Thurston County Senators on openeing night 15-3. The West Coast Guns come back to Story Field July 7th for the final exhibition game of the season.

   Tuesday West Coast League play resumes when the Kelowna Falcons come to town to finish off the longest home stand of the season.
