Corvallis, Ore.- The Black Bears (5-8) offense exploded to the tune of a season high 14 runs as they beat Corvallis (9-4) in game one 14-7.
Cowlitz scored three times in the first inning sending eight batters to the plate.
But Corvallis answered with a big inning of their own in the fourth. The Knights scored five times to take the lead.
The Black Bears went back to work in the fifth and scored twice to tie the game at five.
In the sixth the Bears reclaimed the lead for good. After back-to-back one out singles from Marco Valenzuela (SO Nevada) and Dane Stankiewicz (SO Grand Canyon) the Corvallis reliever walked the next three Cowlitz batters on 12 pitches. Jace McKinney (JR University of Portland) and Austin Ingraham (SR TCU) each earned RBI with their walks to make it 7-5. Ryan Kim (SO University of Portland) then scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to three. Finally Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon) drove in the ninth Cowlitz run on a groundout.
After Corvallis scored one run in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to cut the lead to 9-7 Cowlitz put the game away in the ninth. The Black Bears scored five times sending nine batters up.
The first arm out of the bullpen Nick Strange (JR Tacoma College) earned the win coming in relief of starter David Wallum (JR Washington State). Strange earned his first decision of the season pitching two innings giving up one run on one hit. Wallum lasted four innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits while striking out five Corvallis hitters.
Colten Barnes (SR Bellevue) pitched the seventh inning giving up one run on two walks. Lastly Davis Baillie (R-SO Washington State) went the final two innings and was perfect with three strikeouts.
After being swept by the Knights to open the season the Black Bears can win the series Sunday in Corvallis.
Second year Black Bear Nico Tellache (SO LHP Oregon) makes his 2017 season debut against Ross Massey (JR LHP Tulane). First pitch will be at 5:05 PM.
