Longview, Wash.- Cowlitz moved to 3-0 in exhibition games this season Wednesday beating the Kitsap BlueJackets 8-1.
The Black Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon) led off the inning with a double. The next batter Nick Roberts (SO Washington) drove him in with a single. Jared Bentley (SO Mt Hood College) doubled the lead with an RBI single. Bentley ran all the way to third on the play from an E7.
Cowlitz struck twice more in the third. Williams hit an RBI double to make it 3-0. Roberts then drove in his second run with an RBI fielder's choice.
Newcomer Cory Voss (SR Arizona) hit the first home run of the season at Story Field for the Bears to lead off the fourth. Cowlitz made it 6-0 in the sixth. Bentley drove in his second run with a ground out.
Kitsap finally got on the board in the seventh with a bases loaded RBI single. But Cowlitz answered right away in the bottom of the inning with two runs to put the game away. Kona Quiggle (SO Grand Canyon) made it 7-1 with an RBI double. Roberts then capped off a 3-for-4 night with his third RBI. Roberts also scored twice against the BlueJackets.
The first Black Bears reliever Corbin Powers (R-SR University of Portland) qualified for the win pitching the fourth inning. Powers was perfect inducing three ground outs. Starter CJ Blowers (JR Edmonds College) pitched the first three innings giving up one hit with one strikeout and two walks.
Nico Tellache (SO Oregon), David Wallum (JR Western Oregon), Christian Cosby (JR Chapman), Joey Morris (SO University of Portland) and Davis Baillie (R-SO Washington State) each pitched one inning to finish off the game.
The Black Bears play their fourth of six exhibition games Thursday against the Thurston County Senators. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
