Longview, Wash.- The Thurston County Senators shocked Cowlitz Thursday in a non-West Coast League game winning 4-1.
The Senators split the season series after losing on opening night at Story Field 15-3.
The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh when Thurston County broke through scoring four runs. After a single to lead off the inning and a sacrifice bunt the Senators took the lead on an RBI double. Two batters later a two run triple increased the lead to 3-0. The Senators capped off the inning with an RBI single.
Cowlitz answered with one run in the bottom of the eighth. Jace McKinney (JR University of Portland) led off the inning with a single then advanced to second on a throwing error from the Thurston County short stop. Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) hit a two out single to drive in the only Black Bear run. The second Senator reliever held the Bears in check the rest of the way earning a nine out save.
The third Cowlitz reliever Nathan Bonck (SO Seattle University) took the loss. Bonck came in during the seventh and lasted .2 inning giving up all four runs on four hits with one strikeout. Starter Trevor Conn (R-SR Dallas Baptist) pitched the first two innings allowing just one hit while striking out four Senators with two free passes.
Nick Strange (JR Tacoma College) was the first reliever to come in and lasted 2.2 innings. KJ Strickland (JR Linn-Benton College) followed going 1.1 innings. After Bonck, Kevin West (SO UC Riverside) pitched .2 inning. Jimmy Fouse (JR Dallas Baptist) then made his season debut lasting .2 inning. Finally Harrison Goonewardene (SO Washington) pitched the ninth inning.
The Black Bears are now 3-1 in exhibition games this season. Cowlitz has two more non-WCL games remaining against Kitsap and the West Coast Guns.
Cowlitz gets back to WCL league play Friday when the Port Angeles Lefties come to town for the first time ever. First pitch is at 6:35 PM.
