Longview, Wash.- Cowlitz (7-9) jumped out to 2-0 and 5-3 leads against Port Angeles (9-12) in game one Friday and hung on for a 5-4 victory.

   In the bottom of the first inning Nyles Nygaard (SR Western Oregon) hit the first home run of the season at home for the Black Bears to make it 2-0. Nygaard made his return to the lineup after dealing with an ankle injury.

   The Lefties struck back in the top of the second. A two-run double and an RBI single gave Port Angeles a 3-2 lead.

   Cowlitz answered in the fifth. Kona Quiggle (SO Grand Canyon) hit an RBI single with the bases loaded to tie the game. The next batter Cory Voss (SR Arizona) drew a walk to give the Bears a 4-3 lead. Finally Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) hit into a 4-6-3 double play but Nygaard scored to make it 5-3.

   Port Angeles did get one more in the seventh and loaded the bases in the ninth but Davis Baillie (R-SO Washington State) induced a 4-3 double play to end the ball game and earn his first save of the season.

   Starter Yancy Bird (R-SO Lower Columbia College) became the first Black Bear to win two games this season improving his record to 2-1. Bird lasted six innings and gave up all three runs on five hits with two strikeouts, a walk and two hit batters. Jimmy Fouse (JR Dallas Baptist) pitched the seventh and eighth innings giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Baillie allowed the first three batters to reach on singles in the ninth but a ground ball to third put out the runner coming home for the first out.

   The Black Bears try to win their third series of the season Saturday at 6:35 PM. Ace Corbin Powers (LHP R-SR University of Portland) faces Luke Fralely (RHP SR Tiffin) on the hill.
