Comeback for the ages

Longview, Wash.- It was a special night at David Story Field as Cowlitz came back from a 10-3 deficit in the third inning to sweep Port Angeles with a 16-12 victory.

The Black Bears (9-9) scored six runs in the bottom of the third and sent ten batters to the plate to narrow the gap to 10-9. In the fifth Kona Quiggle (SO Grand Canyon) tied the game with an RBI single. The next batter Devlin Granberg (SR Dallas Baptist) brought the Bears a 12-10 lead with a two run single.

Port Angeles (9-14) struck back in the seventh with two runs to tie the game for the second time.

But the Black Bears kept the bats going in the bottom half of the inning. Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) hit a slow roller up the third base side that just stayed fair to make it 13-12. Two batters later Marco Valenzuela (SO Nevada) hit an RBI single to grab some insurance.

Cowlitz put the game away in the eighth. Both Jace McKinney (JR University of Portland) and Nyles Nygaard (SR Western Oregon) came home on wild pitches.

The Black Bears second reliever Davis Baillie (R-SO Washington State) picked up the win. It was his first decision of the season. Baillie pitched the seventh and eighth and went from giving up a 12-10 lead to earning the victory. Baillie gave up two hits while striking out two batters along with two walks. Starter Nico Tellache (SO Oregon) lasted two innings giving up eight runs on seven hits with one walk and one hit batter.

KJ Strickland (JR Linn-Benton College) pitched four innings in between Tellache and Baillie. Strickland gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Nick Strange (JR Tacoma College) pitched the ninth giving up two hits and added two strikeouts.

The Lefties scored four runs in the first, added a solo home run in the second and brought in five more in the third to take a seven run cushion.

Cowlitz swept their first series of the season with the comeback and also won their first get away game of the year. The Black Bears have turned a 2-7 start into a .500 record going 7-2 in their last nine games.

The Black Bears start a six game Canadian road trip Monday in Kelowna at 6:35 PM. Trevor Conn (RHP R-SR Dallas Baptist) gets the start on the mound.
