Black Bears

Another slow start

Kelowna, B.C.- For the second game in a row Kelowna jumped out to a sizable advantage and hung on the rest of the way to take the series.

Tuesday the Falcons (14-9) scored five runs in the first inning and three more runs in the second to take an 8-1 edge and hung on to win 8-6.

In the first the Falcons sent eight runners to the plate and drew two hit by pitches plus a walk. The Black Bears (9-11) answered with a run in the top of the second. After Devlin Granberg (SR Dallas Baptist) tripled, Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) brought him home with an RBI ground out.

Kelowna then took their biggest lead in the bottom half of the inning with a run coming home on a wild pitch and a two run double.

Cowlitz narrowed the gap to 8-3 in the eighth. Jace McKinney (JR University of Portland) and Cory Voss (SR Arizona) each hit RBI singles.

The Black Bears kept pressing and made it a two run ball game as McKinney hit another RBI single followed by an RBI fielder's choice from Nyles Nygaard (SR Western Oregon) and an RBI sacrifice fly by Evan Williams (IN-FR Oregon). But Voss flew out to left field to end the game.

Starter David Wallum (JR Western Oregon) lasted only 1.1 innings which dropped his record to 0-3. Wallum gave up all eight runs on five hits with one strikeout, two walks and two hit batters.

Christian Cosby (JR Chapman) then stopped the bleeding pitching his longest outing of the summer. Cosby went 4.2 innings giving up two hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Kevin West (SO UC Riverside) pitched the final two innings. West didn't give up a hit and added one strikeout with one walk.

Cowlitz out hit Kelowna for the second night in a row but came out on the losing end again.

The Black Bears will try and get one game of the series in the season finale with Kelowna Wednesday. Austin Merrill (RHP SO Chapman) starts against Braeden Toikka (LHP JR Western Oklahoma State College). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
