Black Bears

Wolves bite back

Longview, Wash.- Gresham jumped out to a 4-0 lead Saturday and hung on to even the series against Cowlitz with a 6-2 victory.

The GreyWolves (4-6, 14-23) opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single.

Gresham exploded for three more runs in the third. The GreyWolves hit an RBI single with two runners aboard. On the play a bobble from the Black Bears left fielder and a throwing error put two runners in scoring position. The next batter cleared the bases with a single to make it 4-0.

Both teams had trouble producing offense after that for awhile. The next 18 GreyWolves batters were retired meanwhile the Black Bears (6-2, 17-18) were no hit until Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) singled with two outs in the sixth.

Cowlitz got in the game in the seventh. Andy Armstrong (SO Oregon State) scored from third when the Gresham pitcher threw the ball away on a pickoff toss to first.

But Gresham put the game out of reach in the ninth with a two-run single to make it 6-1.

Devlin Granberg (SR Dallas Baptist) answered back with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth but it wasn't enough.

Starter Davis Baillie (R-SO Washington State) lost his first game of the season and now has a 2-1 record. Baillie pitched seven innings giving up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. CJ Blowers (JR Edmonds College) pitched the final two innings giving up the final two runs on four hits with one strikeout and one free pass.

The Black Bears season high six game winning streak came to an end. Also the loss coupled with Corvallis' win over Port Angeles dropped Cowlitz out of first place.

Cowlitz and Gresham play their final game before the All-Star break Sunday at 5:05 PM. The rubber match is a battle of the aces as Corbin Powers (LHP R-SR University of Portland) takes on Rob Reaser (RHP JR Lewis & Clark College).
