Sweet revenge

Longview, Wash.- The last time Cowlitz saw Walla Walla was last summer at Borleske Stadium and the Sweets dominated the Black Bears sweeping them by a combined score of 20-4.

   Cowlitz got revenge this season sweeping Walla Walla at Story Field by a combined score of 21-5.

   The Black Bears (12-3, 23-19) won the get away game Monday 2-1 coming from behind late. Trailing 1-0 Derek Scott (JR Abilene Christian) hit a one out single in the bottom of the fifth to start the rally. Scott advanced to second on a pick-off throwing error by the Walla Walla starting pitcher. Dane Stankiewicz (SO Grand Canyon) then drove him in with an RBI single.

   Ryan Kim (SO University of Portland) led off the eighth with a double to deep right center. Andy Armstrong (SO Oregon State) then sacrifice bunted Kim to third. Nyles Nygaard (SR Western Oregon) drove him in easily with a deep RBI sac fly to right field to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.

   Closer Kragen Kechely (SO Dallas Baptist) retired the Sweets in order in the ninth to earn his third save this season.

   The Black Bears first reliever Cole Henderson (SO Nevada) picked up his first win to improve his record to 1-2. Henderson pitched the eighth and only gave up a single. Cobi Johnson (SR Northwest Nazarene) lasted seven strong innings in his first start of the season. Johnson gave up the Sweets run on only three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

   Walla Walla (6-11, 21-23) got on the board first in the fourth. After a one out double an RBI single made it 1-0 Sweets.

   Cowlitz earned their third sweep of the season. The Black Bears also swept Port Angeles June 23-25 and Wenatchee July 11-13.

   Corvallis lost at Yakima Valley 5-3. Cowlitz is now two and a half games up on the Knights for first place in the South Division.

   The Black Bears move on Tuesday to face the Bellingham Bells at Joe Martin Field. Christian Cosby (JR Chapman) gets the start against Rogelio Reyes (RHP SO Cal). First pitch is at 6:35 PM.
