Bell rung

Bellingham, Wash.- Bellingham put up the most runs against Cowlitz all season in game one winning 14-5.

The Bells (8-8, 24-19) were ahead of the curve all night as they jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after the first inning.

The Black Bears (12-4, 23-20) did tie the game in the third though. Marco Valenzuela (SO Nevada) led off the inning with a double. Dane Stankiewicz (SO Grand Canyon) then got an infield single to put runners on the corners. Andy Armstrong (SO Oregon State) drove in the Bears first run with an RBI sacrifice fly. The next batter Nyles Nygaard (SR Western Oregon) hit an RBI single to tie the game.

But Bellingham answered right away with a four run bottom of the inning sending nine batters up. Cowlitz kept it close in the fourth. Derek Scott (JR Abilene Christian) hit a two out solo home run over the right field wall to make it 6-3. It was Scott's third home run in the last four games. Ryan Kim (SO University of Portland) narrowed the gap further with an RBI single.

The Bells got back the four run cushion with two in the bottom of the inning.

A six run sixth did the Bears in as Bellingham sent 12 batters to the plate this time to make it 14-4.

Cory Voss (SR Arizona) scored the final run on a wild pitch in the eighth.

Starter Christian Cosby (JR Chapman) took the loss dropping his record to 3-3. Cosby only lasted 2.2 innings giving up six runs on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks. KJ Strickland (JR College of Idaho), Kevin West (SO UC Riverside) and Nico Tellache (SO Oregon) followed Cosby. Lastly Jace McKinney (JR University of Portland) pitched for the first time since his senior year of high school and struck out the side in the eighth.

The Black Bears five game winning streak came to a close. Corvallis was idle Tuesday so the Bears are now two games up on the Knights for first place with two games in hand.

The Black Bears walked ten Bells which was the most in a single game this season.

Austin Merrill (RHP SO Chapman) will try and get Cowlitz back on the right track Wednesday at 6:35 PM. Merle Rowan-Kennedy (RHP University of Puget Sound) opposes Merrill on the hill.
