Bells sweep Bears

Bellingham, Wash.- Bellingham beat Cowlitz in the get away game to sweep the Black Bears with a 7-5 victory.

   Cowlitz (12-6, 23-22) once again couldn't avoid a big innning from the Bells (10-8, 26-19) in game three as Bellingham sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning and scored six runs on four hits to make it 6-1.

   The Black Bears stayed in the game though with an RBI single in the third from Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian). In the fourth Nick Roberts (SO Washington) narrowed the gap further with an RBI single of his own.

   Bellingham answered in the sixth with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 7-3.

   Cowlitz fought back with an RBI double in the seventh from Cory Voss (SR Lewis & Clark State). The Bells closer came out in the ninth and Pearson picked up his second RBI scoring Voss from third on a ground out but a strikeout ended the game with the tying run at the plate.

   Starter CJ Blowers (R-SO Edmonds College) took the loss only lasting 1.1 innings. Blowers gave up six runs on four hits with no strikeouts and four walks. Taylor Graham (JR Central Washington) kept the Bears in the game pitching 5.2 innings of relief. Graham only gave up one run on three hits with three strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter. Joey Morris (SO University of Portland) pitched the bottom of the eighth and gave up one hit and one walk.

   The Black Bears opened the scoring in the second when Marco Valenzuela (SO Nevada) hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Derek Scott (JR Abilene Christian).

   Cowlitz was swept for the fourth time this season.

   Corvallis beat Gresham 8-5 but Yakima Valley once again lost to Bend 11-4. The Black Bears are one game ahead of Corvallis for first place in the South Division with two games in hand. Cowlitz is also one game ahead of Yakima Valley for second place in the overall division standings.

   The Black Bears try to get back on track Friday when Victoria comes to town. Nico Tellache (LHP SO Oregon) gets the start against Wyatt Boone (RHP FR Seattle University) at 6:35 PM.
