All knotted up

BEND, Ore.- Bend evened the opening series of the season Saturday night coming from behind to take game two 6-4.

     With Cowlitz leading 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning the Elks sent ten batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits and one error to take a commanding 6-2 lead. After a bunt up the third base side and a sacrifice bunt, a throwing error on the short stop brought home a run. The next Elk batter also laid down a perfect bunt that rolled past the left side of the mound. An RBI infield single to short stop made it 3-2. The next batter looped the ball down the left field line for a two run double. Finally an RBI single made it 6-2.

     But the Black Bears (1-1) didn't quit. In the top of the seventh Jonathan Hodo (JR Benedictine) led off reaching on a fielding error from the first baseman. Dutton Elske (JR University of Portland) drove him in with an RBI ground out.

     Isaac Deveaux (SO University of Utah) led off the eighth drawing a walk. Deveaux then advanced to second and third on a passed ball and a wild pitch respectively. Liam Ballance (SR Vancouver Island University) made it a two run game with an RBI on a throwing error on the first baseman.

     But the Black Bears couldn't come all the way back as they were set down in order in the ninth.

     Jay Edwards (JR Santa Ana College) was the first reliever of the game for Cowlitz and took the loss going 1.2 innings giving up five runs but only one was earned on five hits with one strikeout.

     Starter Travis Paynter (JR Lower Columbia College) lasted four innings giving up only one run on three hits while striking out one Elk. Christian Peters (JR University of Portland) came in after Edwards and did not give up a run in 1.1 innings and only gave up one hit with a pair of strikeouts. Finally Cody Turner (SO Chapman) pitched a clean eighth with one strikeout.

     Cowlitz opened the scoring in the first. Deveaux scored Dalton Mitchell (R-SR Alabama A&M) with an RBI single. Bend (1-1) fought back with a first pitch home run to left field to lead off the bottom of the fourth.

     The Black Bears took their second lead in the sixth. After Deveaux walked and stole second base Jimmy McLaughlin (JR Benedictine) made it 2-1 with an RBI single.

     Deveaux finished 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.

     Cowlitz plays their first rubber match of the season Sunday at 5:05 PM. Wyatt Stanley (SO Edmonds College) gets the start on the mound.
